The Rangoli saree is woven at Chendamangalam in a tie-and-dye technique, the colour applied through a resist-dyeing process before weaving. Tie and dye in a handloom saree produces a pattern of colour that is soft at the edges, the colours bleeding into each other in the way that only the resist technique allows.

Fabric: Handloom cotton

Design: Tie-and-dye colour pattern

Weave cluster: Chendamangalam, Ernakulam, Kerala

Loom: Traditional pit loom

Length: 6 yards including blouse piece

Care & Maintenance

Dry clean is recommended for the first 3 washes to set the zari and natural dyes. For subsequent washes, hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not wring or machine wash. Dry flat in shade , prolonged direct sunlight can dull the zari lustre. Store folded in a clean muslin cloth; avoid plastic bags and mothballs near zari borders.

The Weavers of Chendamangalam

The craft arrived in Chendamangalam when the Paliyath Achans, prime ministers of the Cochin kingdom, brought weavers from Tamil Nadu's Devangar community to settle along the Periyar river. What began as a new livelihood took root across generations until it became inseparable from the identity of Chendamangalam itself.

Neythkari works directly with these weaver families, not middlemen. A fair portion of every sale returns to the craftsperson. When you buy from us, you are participating in a supply chain that keeps one of Kerala's most enduring traditions alive.
