Pure mulberry silk · Handwoven · Silk Mark certified

Kanchipuram has been weaving silk for temple festivals and weddings for over four centuries. The craft is slow. A single saree can take weeks on the loom, and every gold motif is woven into the fabric rather than printed or embroidered on top.

This saree is woven in a deep bottle green. Small gold zari buttas are scattered across the body. The border and pallu carry peacocks, swans and fine chevron work in rich zari, shot with flashes of copper. Its Silk Mark tag certifies that it is pure natural silk.

We photographed her on the brackish backwaters of Kochi, against the Chinese fishing nets that have framed this harbour for centuries. The setting felt right: two southern traditions, both centuries old, both made by hand, and both still standing.

Wear her for the nine nights of Navratri, to Golu visits and Saraswati Pooja, or to the first-letter morning of Vijayadashami. She also suits weddings, temple days and every celebration afterwards. A Kanchipuram silk, cared for well, outlives the occasion and becomes an heirloom.

Care: Dry clean only. Store wrapped in soft cotton or muslin, and refold every few months so the zari does not crease.

Care & Maintenance

Dry clean is recommended for the first 3 washes to set the zari and natural dyes. For subsequent washes, hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not wring or machine wash. Dry flat in shade , prolonged direct sunlight can dull the zari lustre. Store folded in a clean muslin cloth; avoid plastic bags and mothballs near zari borders.

The Weavers of Chendamangalam

The craft arrived in Chendamangalam when the Paliyath Achans, prime ministers of the Cochin kingdom, brought weavers from Tamil Nadu's Devangar community to settle along the Periyar river. What began as a new livelihood took root across generations until it became inseparable from the identity of Chendamangalam itself.

Neythkari works directly with these weaver families, not middlemen. A fair portion of every sale returns to the craftsperson. When you buy from us, you are participating in a supply chain that keeps one of Kerala's most enduring traditions alive.
