The craft is slow. A single saree can take weeks on the loom, and every gold motif is woven into the fabric rather than printed or embroidered on top.

This saree is woven in a deep bottle green. Small gold zari buttas are scattered across the body. The border and pallu carry peacocks, swans and fine chevron work in rich zari, shot with flashes of copper. Its Silk Mark tag certifies that it is pure natural silk.

We photographed her on the brackish backwaters of Kochi, against the Chinese fishing nets that have framed this harbour for centuries. The setting felt right: two southern traditions, both centuries old, both made by hand, and both still standing.

Wear her for the nine nights of Navratri, to Golu visits and Saraswati Pooja, or to the first-letter morning of Vijayadashami. She also suits weddings, temple days and every celebration afterwards.
